The
Climate in Jordan varies from Mediterranean in the west to desert
in the south and east. The average monthly temperature in Amman
ranges from 46 F to 70 F which is equivalent to 8 C to 26 C .In
Aquaba which is more to the south of the region the temperature
ranges from 60 F to 93 F which is equivalent to 16 C to 33 C. The
direction taken by the winds in the country is that of a western
to southwestern nature. In some cases the winds become hot dry and
dusty this change is caused by the influences of the Arabian Peninsula
on the areas surrounding it. Such winds are referred to as the "khamasin"
winds. The "khamasin" winds blow during the early and
late summer months. They can blow for several days at a time.
Precipitation mainly occurs during the cold months of the winter.
The average amount of rainfall recorded varies from one region to
the next. In the northwestern region i.e. the region nearest to
the Jordan River the amount of rainfall recorded can reach up to
16 in. which is equivalent to 400 mm. Towards the south of the country
rainfall tends to be far less. The annual amount of rainfall recorded
for the southern part of the country is 4 in which is equivalent
to 100mm. In the uplands east of the Jordan River the annual amount
of rainfall recorded is 14 in., which is equivalent to 355 mm. The
areas surrounding the Jordan River itself are recorded to receive
18 in of rain annually, which is equivalent to 200 mm. The dessert
regions of the country received 75% less rainfall then that received
in the region closest to the Jordan River. In contrast to the desert
regions the highlands of Jordan are recorded to receive high quantities
of rain and in some cases these areas also witness falls of snow
and the gatherings of frost.
