The plant and animal life in Jordan falls into three distinct typologies
Mediterranean, steppe (treeless lands), and desert. In the uplands
of Jordan plant and animal life is influenced by the Mediterranean-
like climate. In this area one may see the growth of dense bushes
and small trees. In the steppe region that lies in the eastern part
of the country one may see grasslands and sagebrushes. In the desert
vegetation is only seen in land depressions and on the sides and
floors of valleys.
Forests
may only be seen in the highlands of Jordan. The predominant types
of trees in these forests include Aleppo Oaks, karma oaks, and Palestinian
pistachios. Aleppo pines, oriental strawberry tress and wild olive
trees are also found in these areas. In areas with less rainfall
one may see the growth of Phoenician Juniper trees.
The
varied wildlife of Jordan includes speeches of wild boars cows and
goats. These animals may be found in the gorges and in the oasis
of Ain Al Azraq. In this oasis there also exists to a lesser degree
hyenas, panthers, jackals, and mole rats. Centipedes' lizards and
scorpions also inhabit the area. The types of birds found in Jordan
include the golden eagle and the vulture.
